We’ve all known for a while now that NY resolutions (NYR) don’t work, yet we still come up with a few wishes every year in the hope that they finally stick. The history of NYR is pretty shady but it’s believed to have started with the Babylonians who reportedly made promises to the gods in hopes they'd earn good favour in the coming year. Nowadays it’s usually about favouring ourselves – lose weight, make more money, be happier etc. But, why do NYR fail? Well according to Psychology today[i] the main reasons why many NYR fail is because; your goals aren’t clear, you’re overwhelmed, you’re discouraged and you’re not ready to change, and although these are obviously a hindrance, the main reason why so many NYR’s fail is because they’re focused on the outcome – instead of the process. Of course, you want to lose weight, make more money and be happier – but which habits will best help you achieve these goals? Identify these habits and your chances of succeeding will increase. For instance, instead of claiming you want to lose weight, why not try setting a few habits in place which will help you lose weight – I’m going to walk to work 3 days a week and I won't drink alcohol during the week. Or, instead of asking the gods for more money – try saving 10% of your monthly salary and cooking at home 4 days a week. You see, these habits are not only clearer than your outcome, but they’re simpler to navigate. There’s no need to complicate things but you must be consistent. Completing these habits 80% of the time over the next year will yield greater results than a 100% effort over the next month. Stop putting so much pressure on yourself to change EVERYTHING and start will a few simple goal-specific habits instead. Which habits will you focusing on this year?
